Good news for physical therapy patients: Action Reaction is starting home health physical therapy! This type of care is crucial for patients, especially for those right out of an orthopedic operation. We can now act as a direct bridge between home health and outpatient orthopedic physical therapy.
What is home health PT?
Home health care provides medical service to patients in their home. It can be beneficial for post-procedure recovery to integrate the patient back into his or her normal life. Such services may include physical and occupational therapy, nursing, dietary counseling, social service, home health aides, and speech therapy. Home health care can be a valuable and economical alternative to extended hospital stays. Home health physical therapy generally is reserved to patients who are homebound, meaning the patient must have difficulty leaving their home with considerable effort, much less be able to attend outpatient physical therapy. The patient may require a walker or wheelchair to get around.
How do I begin home health services?
A patient’s physician will write a referral for home rehabilitation services. Depending on the patient’s medical condition it may be necessary for a nurse to be an admitting professional. If nursing is not required, the physical therapist will coordinate all services provided and admit the patient to home health. In each case, both will closely communicate with the referring physician regarding the treatment plan and progress.
What will home visits entail?
Your first home physical therapy visit will be an introduction to the services to be provided. The therapist will go over information, emergency procedures, consent to treat forms, and asses home safety. Once this is established, the physical therapist would assess the patient’s physical functional ability through objective measure such as strength and ROM tests among other tests. Subsequent visits will follow the set treatment plan to eventually lead the patient to his or her functional goals and a higher level of self-sufficiency.
What types of treatment can I receive?
Your visit will be just as productive as an appointment in our clinic, but within the comfort of your own home. Some physical therapy treatment techniques may include walking/balance training, therapeutic exercise and strengthening, pain management, posture training. Manual techniques such as stretching, joint and tissue mobilization may be employed. We can also provide wellness technique education and order equipment to suit the patient’s functional and/or safety needs.
